A 2,500 mile journey around the Eastern US by a couple in their 70's to visit friends and relatives over 70 or 80 years old. We spent 3 days in each place and everything went smoothly--until it didn't.
In April 2024, my wife Nancy and I decided to take a trip around the Eastern USA to see a number of people we care about who are in their 70’s and 80’s. We are 74 and 72. The impulse was that if we waited too long, we might never see some of them again.

We drove from Racine, Wisconsin to Ohio, then Virginia, then Maryland, then to see the Native American Museum in Washington DC which was closed when we tried to see it two years earlier because of Covid-19 precautions. It was filled with beautiful old maps, and artifacts preserved from different tribes across the US. My wife Nancy is part Cherokee and found it a poignant record of American’s dark past.

I found it to be a repulsive record of East Coast White European people creating a Native holocaust as rampant immigration to Indian territories grabbed more and more land. As an American Jew descended from immigrants to America in 1900, who lost family in the World War II Holocaust, it was unavoidable for me to react any other way.

We then traveled north to see an old friend in Yorktown Heights, New York went to south to New York City and from there we traveled to Mystic and New London, Connecticut. From there we drove to Ricketts, Pennsylvania where to our dismay, our trip went off the rails.  We drove from there to Chesterton, Indiana where the unexpected moment occurred.

Turning Parchment Pages is about time slipping away and how best to use what might still be left to us.
