“Throughout my life I’ve been sustained by the mystery, the gifts and the demands of friendship.”
The best way to explain friendship is when another person joins you when you are in peril. Rick Munden, about whom I have written 15,000 words, has been my lifelong (since September 1961) muse and pathfinder. He had been hit by a car when very young, had a limp; he was beyond sports and fighting. No one targeted him and he was his own island. I decided that, as a guy constantly in fights with others who wouldn’t tolerate my indifference to sports, or because my nose was too big – in their opinion, for my skinny body – this loner who knew more about science and technology that anyone in the school, including the teachers, was a person I decided to get to know. He spoke with a twang, a sort of drawl, which initially made other people mistake him for some bumpkin. After I first approached him for whatever reason, we sat on his three-flat’s grey-painted back stairs and talked for hours about, the Moon, (we landed there eight years later) and getting to Mars to stay.
