In my long life, like my title states, I have in fact both “Escaped and Embraced the Cops of Chicago”. My early experiences with the police as a young teenager running a ramshackle newsstand until late at night showed me that there were kind, protective souls who watched over me and my small business. But before I turned 18, I faced the brutal side of dangerous detectives who thought they’d cornered a neighborhood thief, when in reality, it was just an innocent kid caught up in a tragic mistake. I learned so much from the decisions I had to make so early in my life; facing hard choices which would cast the shape of my future and the fates of others.
